Women's Indoor Basketball Team Should Do Well

AFTER its success in the quadrangular tourney at Blenheim earlier in the season, Canterbury has an extremely strong chance of winning the South Island women’s indoor basketball tournament which started last evening. The tournament has even greater importance for individual players, as a number of those taking part for the provincial teams, will be combining with selected North Island players to form a squad for the New Zealand team to tour Australia.

The chances for Canterbury players look very strong as the local team appears to be superior in fitness and individual ability to possibly any other to represent the province.

Captaining Canterbury will be the Australian, J. Taylor, who has fashioned a remarkable record after only a season in this country. A former New South Wales representative and Australian trialist, she captained Canterbury and the South Island and was vice-captain of last year’s New Zealand team. With the

ability to bring put the best in her team, Taylor is a very capable guard and has a wealth of attacking and scoring shots.

The forward line of B. Ross, S. Chamberlain and B. Taylor has plenty of speed—in other games this year, these players have scored heavily from fast breaks down the court—and each are competent set shots. The centre, J. Hudson, who has represented the South Island, has also been a high scorer in club games this year and her ability to shoot accurately under pressure will be an asset to the side.

With J. Taylor in. the guard line will be B. Humphreys, who played for South Island and was captain of the Rest which played New Zealand last year, and the former New Zealand representative, A. Sinclair. Both are consistent goalscorers and Humphreys, al-, though a short player, can out-rebound far taller opponents.

The newcomers to the team, J. Hegant, J. Gaskell and G. Parrant, are all capable players and the latter,

in particular, has shown a marked improvement since her inclusion in the senior side.

Canterbury’s hardest game appears to be against Nel- .

son, although it has beaten Nelson twice this year. Both Southland and the West Coast look to be untried combinations but Otago can never be taken lightly and this match, to be played this evening, could be very even.
