ORDEAL FOR CARPENTER

Novice Draws Emerson

(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright)

MONTREAL, July 17.

Canada’s Davis Cup novice, the 22-year-old Carpenter, was chosen yesterday to face the Wimbledon champion, R. Emerson, in the opening singles match of the CanadaAustralia tie tomorrow. .The top Canadian player, F. Godbout; was drawn against J. Newcombe in the other singles. Australia’s non-playing captain, Mr Harry Hopman, also took the unusual step of naming a doubles team more than 24 hours before the deadline. He chose Emerson and A. Roche but reserved the right to change in case of emergencies. United Press International said the proceedings were enlivened by an embarrassing error by Mr Hopman. The name of Roche was drawn to oppose Godbout in the second singles. Hopman, obviously surprised, hastily reached into his pocket and presented a typewritten letter naming his singles players. He apologised for his error.

Newcombe was then substituted for Roche.
