Mother-And-Son Vocal Success

The Ashburton Silver Band’s talent quest first prize, a trip to Australia for one week or £132 in cash, was won by a mother-and-son vocal combination in Ashburton on Sunday evening. They are Mrs M. E. Campbell and Peter Campbell.

Peter played the guitar while his mother sang. One of their items, “Now that I can dance,” a recent popular hit, was the most popular item of the evening. Prizes were presented by the Mayor of Ashburton (Mr J. Davidson) and Mrs Davidson. ■

There were 12 finalists, and second place went to the Maori vocal group, the P.T.K. Three. They won seven guineas and 1000 cigarettes. Third place went to N. S. and C. H. Stringer, who presented vocal items.

Peter and Mrs Campbell are undecided about their prize,

but Mrs Campbell says they will probably take the trip to Australia.

Proceeds from the quest will go towards buying new uniforms for the Ashburton Silver Band. The contest is held each year. Other prizes awarded on Sunday evening were:—Highest aggregate of votes: R. Englebrecht (guitar and vocal); most votes on any one night, women: Camille Jones (acrobatic dancing); men: R. Englebrecht; additional women’s prize: Cheryl Craig (vocal).
