TWO FAMOUS AIRCRAFT in the Qantas collection of models depicting milestones in the history of aviation. Called “Da Vinci to Sputnik,” the collection is now on exhibition in the Canterbury Museum. TOP: The Fokker monoplane Southern Cross, in which Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Mr C. T. P. Ulm made many pioneer flights. In 1928, the Southern Cross flew from Oakland, California, to Brisbane in 83hrs 38min flying time. The flight was made in three stages. Later the same year, this aircraft made the first Tasman flight. BOTTOM: Louis Bleriot’s No. XI flying-machine, the first aeroplane to cross the English Channel. The flight was made on July 25, 1909.
