WELLINGTON, July 7.

Faced with about the highest internal transport costs in the world, New Zealand must work and plan to achieve internal efficiency to meet the demands of the more co-ordinated shipping handling proposed in the port-streamlining recommendations, said the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) today. The organising of the recommendations on streamlining New Zealand ports would intimately involve the transport industry within this country, the Minister told a management course of senior transport executives today. The handling and organisation of the primary produce of New Zealand under the streamlining recommenda-

tlons would be greatly dependent on. the internal transport system, said Mr McAlpine. “It has a great deal to do with you as part of the transport system of this country,” he said. The streamlining recommendations proposed by the producer boards and the shipping industry would be organised in conjunction with the transport industry and with the participation of its members, he said. “You and the railways, and all forms of transport are going to be vitally concerned with that,” he said. Mr McAlpine forecast future amalgamation of small operators in the road transport business. “Smaller people will need to amalgamate,” he said. “Too much emphasis has been placed on the one-truck operator.
