Tour Hopeful Has Only One Lung

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY, July 7.

A spindly-legged, list North Queensland teacher, who has only one lung, may be the Wallabies half-back deputy to K. Catchpole on the Australian Rugby tour of New Zealand in August.

He is L. Lawrence, a player whom the New Zealand Colts manager, Mr M. S. Ingpen, recently mentioned as one of the outstanding new players in Australia this year. With Australia looking for another half-back to augment the mercurial Catchpole, Lawrence has caught the eye with brilliant games against the New Zealand Colts and New South Wales.

This season Lawrence, although his passing is not so slick, has, by his mobility, sense of timing, speed to loose play and tenacious covering been likened to Catchpole. Lawrence has battled his way into the Queensland side this year after three seasons with the Teachers’ College Club in the Brisbane competition. Illness as a small child caused an operation to remove a lung and when he first broke into senior football it was feared this would handicap him. But he has overcome this disability to prove a non-stop player of great courage
