SCATHING CRITICS
‘Up-Country Wallop’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 7. British cricket writers were in a scathing mood towards England today.
Most of them devoted their columns to sharp criticism of the home team, with little mention of Australia’s winning efforts.
In the “Daily Sketch”, Brian Scovell described England’s short-lived morning overs as a “real old up-coun-try wallop.” On England fast bowler, F: S. Trueman, he wrote: “Goodbye, Freddie—we must lose you.
“Trueman’s rhythm seems to have gone. Later, when he tightened up on his length, his direction went wrong. Even his own Yorkshire fans urged ‘pitch ’em up lad’.” Sir Learie Constantine, in the “Daily Sketch” wrote: “The fact that Australia are one up may induce England to be more aggressive next time. This match has shown that England’s timid approach does not pay any dividends.”
