HELP FOR SAMOA

Govt Aid Plan

Under the current five-year plan, the Government had undertaken to provide £400,000 for assistance to Western Samoa and to enable Samoans to train in New Zealand, and another £45,000 a year to pay salaries of New Zealanders in Samoa, the acting Minister of External Affairs (Mr Hanan) said in Parliament today. He had been asked by Mrs E. I. Tombleson (Govt., Gisborne) if he had noticed criticism of the Freedom from Hunger campaign committee for agreeing to give £BO.OOO for the establishment of a new Agricultural college in Samoa, on the grounds that this was the Government’s task. Mr Hanan said the Government believed relations between New Zealand and Western Samoa should not be confined to Government level. He welcomed the gift from the Freedom from Hunger campaign.
