WELLINGTON, July 7.

The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) tonight defended the ratio of officers to other ranks in the New Zealand forces.

Speaking in the Budget debate tn the House of Representatives, he said it was approximately that of the British Forces. In the Royal New Zea-

land Navy it was 10.5 per cent compared with the Royal Navy figure of 11.9 per cent Comparative figures for the Army were 10 per cent and 10.3 per cent respectively and for the Air Force 15.8 per cent and 16 per cent

Morale in the New Zealand forces, Mr Eyre said, was higher than it had been for many years.
