SCHOOL BUS USE

Stricter Rules

The Education Department is tightening the use of school buses by putting strict conditions on their use for educational and recreational purposes.

In a direction to all education boards, the department says capital and operating costs of school buses are so high that every effort must be made to conserve the useful life of the vehicles. The primary purpose of the buses is to convey children to and from school, says the department.

The privilege of using departmental buses for educational and recreational trips enjoyed in the past by schools using buses has not been available to others which are served by private contract buses.

The new order brings both kinds of school into line. Any extra use of school buses in future must be officially approved and will then be Charged for at average contract rates. This will be allowed only where private transport cannot be arranged. Schools which depend entirely on departmental buses and cannot hire private ones will be given an annual mileage quota related to their rolls.
