‘FLEECE OF YEAR’

Award For Otago (N Z- Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. July 7. A Dunedin stock firm, representing the estate of Mr Hector Gibson (Tarras) has won the "Fleece of th* Year” competition for the third time since the contest was instituted in 1955. This year’s winning points. 99 out of 100, are the highest ever recorded. Previous, the highest was about 96.

There were 39 entries for the contest—fewer than last year because of poor seasonal conditions —which is held annually in conjunction with the Massey University Wool Association’s conference. The winning fleece was exhibited by Messrs Wright Stephenson, Dunedin. It was grown on a half-bred sheep. Its greasy weight was 121 b, spinning quality 58, yield 73 per cent and clean weight 25 (maximum points attainable). Mr T. S. White, of Gisborne, one of the. judges, said the top fleeces were of excellent quality but, over-all, the standard was lower than usual. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op (Christchurch), grower estate Jas. Stevenson (Rangiora), won the Merino section with 96 points.
