JUNIOR NAT. CUP

4-0 Win To Canterbury Impressive only in- patches, the Canterbury under 18 team went through to the South Island final of the Junior National Cup. beating Nelson under 18. 4-0, at English Park on Saturday. Canterbury scored twice in each half, yet would have won by a cricket score had the team taken., half its chances. Nelson had little to offer except determination, and before the end even this was rapidly disappearing. Canterbury’s ball control was hardly much better than Nelson’s, and It was a rare sight to see a player on either side bring down the ball quickly and cleanly, and then use it intelligently. One of the few successes was the City left-wing, F. Madrussen. whose strong running produced the first and fourth goals. Madrussen had a yard to spare on his marker and was a danger whenever he had the ball. Behind him, at left-half. P Skelton (Western) was the best of a none too sound defence. He tackled strongly and used the ball to advantage, but there was far too much loose kick-, ing by the other defenders for the' team to look comfortable even against a weak forward line.

A. Gowans, who captained the team at right-half, failed to produce the authority expected from him and he did not show up nearly as convincing as he had done in his four senior representative matches this season.

C. Martin opened the scoring after the Nelson goal-keeper. L. Savage, could only push rown a fierce shot by Madrussen. and K. Smythe scored the second with a good left-foot, shot when Gowans opened the way for him with a perfect through pass. K. Pahl, two minutes after the . restart, gave Smythe another clear view for the third goal, and the little Celtic insideleft, himself, smashed home the final goal after Madrussen had laid on the chance. Referee: Mr A. Coulson.
