RECTOR AT TIMARU
MrR. J. Welch Appointed (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, July 5. Mr R. J. Welch, M.A. (Hons.), D.Ed., principal of Kawerau College, has been appointed the new rector of Timaru Boys’ High School. He succeeds Mr M. A. Bull, who retires at the end of January next:
The appointment was announced this afternoon after a meeting of the Timaru High School Board of Governors had interviewed seven applicants, including Mr WelcL Originally there were 37 applicants for the position, but this was narrowed to seven before the final choice was made.
Aged 41, Mr Welch is married with a family of five. He was educated at Alexandra District High School and King’s. High School, Dunedin. Originally he trained for primary service at Dunedin Teachers’ College, but later changed to the post primary service after completing a degree on a rehabilitation bursary, after the Second World War.
While in the Army Mr Welch served during the war in the Middle East, Italy and Japan, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
