REPRIEVED LATE
Decisive Hard Goal-Kick MARIST IS: J. Bums a try;. T. M. Hannan a field goal, B. Connelly three penalty goals. SUBURBS 13: M. Chapman, D. Reeves tries; G. Coombes a penalty, two conversions. Marlst won the game In the last minute. The full-back, Connelly, who had previously missed two reasonably easy shots at goal from penalties, succeeded with his most difficult attempt 10 yards Inside half-way and near the touchline. It was an excellent kick which gave his side a two-point lead and the first win .for some time.
Suburbs might have felt cheated; they had scored two tries to one, but it was Marist which applied the pressure in the last quarter. The left wing, B. Teen, fast and capable, was nearly in twice and the other wing, C. Conredine, was just beaten in a hectic race for the ball on the other side. Burst Through An excellent try by the Marist lock, Burns, started the resurgence. Burns, who had dominated the line-ouths for much of the game, burst through the line 20 minutes before the end, and in spite of some apparently solid tackles, scored in a handy position.
Up till then Suburbs had had a slight advantage. The forwards were a lively lot, appreciably better than the backs, who rarely looked capable of a break-through. The performances of the Canterbury halfback and first five-eighths, L. Davis and W. Cottrell, were a little disappointing. Cottrell looked slow and fiat-footed; but his kicking was powerful enough. The Suburbs flanker, Chapman, was very good. Stronglybuilt, he was not easy to stop as Marist discovered when he stepped out of four tackles to •core his try. T. McKendry was just as active on the Marist flank and the No. 8, P. Angland, was the best all-round forward on the ground. Referee: Mr J. M. Wood.
