PAKEHA SIDE POLISHED
Maoris Suffer 21-2 Defeat The more-polished Pakeha team, winning a majority of the scrums, had too much class for the Maori team and won 21-2. The Maoris spent a lot of time in Pakeha territory but could not finish off their movements. The match was played in art entertaining fashion but many of the back movements from set pl<y were spoiled by bad passing and handling. A heartening feature was the fine performance of P. V. Smith in the unaccustomed role of fullback. He ran well and showed a good defence but was inclined to wait for a kick through to bounce instead of running into it. R. Neiman was smart around the scrum and J. D. M. Walshe found gaps in the Maori line D. McCosh was bustled all day but was not disgraced. The best Maori back was J. Martin. He and J. Hawthorne ran consistently well and were always dangerous. The Pakeha forwards were more consistent and two attacking forwards, P. L. P Doig and R. H. Turton, stood out. Doig made many breaks and was overshadowed only by Turton on defence. J. L. White, M. Mohl and N Wakefield ran strongly in the Maori pack. However, they *ere inclined to take time off between bursts. For the Pakeha team Walshe ( 2). Doig. Neiman and N. B Atkins scored tries. E. J Tavendale kicked three goals Hawthorne kicked a goal for the Maoris. Referee: Mr N. Taylor.
