CYCLIST KILLED

Hit By Car

A cyclist was killed when struck from behind by a car in Carmen road, Hornby, last evening. He was: Lester Henry Craythorne, aged 57, a workman, of 65 Cutts road. The driver of the car. John Hamilton Brown, aged 40, a salesman, of 85 Wairakei road, was not injured. The accident happened about 6.30 p.m. Both cyclist and car were travelling north, and were about a quarter of a mile south of the intersection of Yaldhurst and Carmen roads. The section of road has a 55 mile-an-hour limit. The impact threw Mr Craythorne into the air, and the car's windscreen was shattered. It is believed that Mr Craythorne was killed instantly. His skull was fractured.

Mr Craythorne was married, with a grown-up family. Anyone who saw the accident is asked to get in touch with the motor accident branch at the Christfhurch Central Police Station.
