Salaries In Country Schools

(N Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, July 2. The Women’s Division of Federated Farmers is to ask the Minister of Education to introduce a generous country salary allowance to attract teachers to country schools. A remit to this effect was carried at the Dominion conference in Hamilton today.

It was felt that classification of what is a country school should be examined. “Country allowance should be given for service in rural or remote areas,” said Mrs P. Dampney, of Taranaki “Te Awamutu and Whakatane are graded as country schools, yet they are sizeable towns.” Another delegate said that Timaru Girls’ High School and Invercargill secondary schools were graded as country service. “Many persons who drift from country districts are forced to do so for the educational benefit of their children.” said Mrs A. G. Jamieson, of Banks Peninsula. She was supporting a remit for the establishment of small hostels by the W.D.F.F. for children from country areas. The establishment of such hostels is to be left to the provincial districts where they are needed.

New Zealand manufacturers are to be asked to regard the making of a good type of

children’s shoe as very important. ■ The conference discussed the tendency of pointed toes in children’s footwear. Speakers said they were the cause of much illhealth in later life. The conference supported a movement led by Mr Peter Mclntyre to preserve and

protect ■ the beauties of Tongariro and other national parks from destruction caused by establishing power schemes. The conference is to approach the women of France to help stop the planned nuclear tests in the Pacific.

Officers elected were:— President, Mrs M. E. Irwin (Pukekohe); treasurer, Mrs H, Oden (Rangitikei); vicepresidents, North Island, Mrs J. Bryant (Manawatu), Mrs J. Lees (Central Taranaki), Mrs F. J. T. Poppe (Rangitikei); South Island, Mrs A. T. Charles (Central Otago), Mrs E. V, Hawker (Westland), Mrs D. W. Kain (Westland). Mrs L.
