S. VIETNAM FIGHTING

Rusk Hopeful Of Peace (N. Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 2. Mr Dean Rusk, the United States Secretary of State, said today that peace ought to be possible in South Vietnam without any extension of the fighting. He told a news conference that the first objective of American policy therefore “is to exploit that possibility.” Mr Rusk said peace obviously was not obtained by going out and looking for war, although there was always the risk in further developments and confrontations in dangerous situations of this sort.

Peace ought to be possible because there, were firm agreements subscribed to by all sides in the present situation.
