ABORIGINAL NUMBERS
Big Increase Expected (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, July 2. At the end of the Second World War the number of aboriginals in Australia was estimated at 46,000, but two generations from now the number is likely to be 300,000, as many as when Captain Cook landed, according to a forecast made by Dr. W. E. H. Stanner, reader in anthropology at the Australian National University. For many years fears had been held that the aboriginal population of Australia would die out completely. A survey of the position in the Northern Territory recently showed the aboriginal population to be 19,000. The population for the end of the century is expected to be at least 36,000, with an increase to about 100,000 by the year 2035.
