Speed Skating At Lake Ida

Although entries are low competition in the New Sealand long track speed skating championships, which begin at Lake Ida today, la expected to be ot a high standard.

Several national tttle-holders. including the men’s combined champion, I. McDonald (Christ church), will be defending. McDonald, who holds the New Zealand 590. 1500 and 5000 metres titles as well as the combined championship, is a strong favourite in all events. A racer who seems likely to place a good deal of pressure on McDonald is the 20-year-oid. D. Lyttle, of Christchurch. He has shown considerable ability over the longer distances. Others likely to be prominent include G. Glover and J. Havenaar, both of Christchurch.

Favourite for the marathon championship Is 17-year-old R Montgomery (Christchurch). He won the marathon last season and holds all the Intermediate titles and records.
