Mr J. M. Fitzgerald has been appointed regional executive officer of the Education Department in Christchurch in succession to Mr J. F. Mills. He will be responsible for administration throughout most of the South bland. Mr Fitzgerald was an early pupil of St Kevin’s College. Oamaru, and tennis, champion; there for two years. He joined the Education Department in Wellington in 1938. During the war he rose from private to captain in the New Zealand Army Service Corps while overseas for five years.

Afterwards he joined the Rehabilitation Department in Christchurch and supervised bousing and business loans to returned servicemen.

Returning to the Education Department head office in 1948, Mr Fitzgerald became officer for school transport, divisional officer for school buildings, and then, tn 1960, eame to Christchurch as assistant regional executive officer. While in Wellington he was a junior provincial representative Rugby player, then a senior club team member and he was a member of the first New Zealand Army team in the Middle East

Mr Fitzgerald, who is 47, is 'married with six children.
