S. AFRICA ‘KEEN TO HELP’

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

SALISBURY, July 1.

Mr lan Smith, the Southern Rhodesian Prime Minister, will fly to South Africa today to see Dr. H. Verwoerd, for talks which may have a vital effect on the controversial issue of independence for Southern Rhodesia. Mr Smith is expected to seek assurances that South Africa would be prepared to back Southern Rhodesia economically if it unilaterally declares its independence.

Mr Smith told a public meeting at Fort Victoria on Monday: “What investors want is a continuation in Southern Rhodesia of the present standard of government and civilisation. South Africa is very keen to help us, but they want a lead.”
