No Apartheid Debate

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 29. The proposed debate between the Bishop of Auckland (the Rt Rev, E. A. Gowing) and Mr A. L. Lydiard on apartheid and sport has been called off. In a joint statement today they said the controversial nature of the issues led them to the conclusion that a debate on them would not be in the best interest and that they had agreed no debate would be held.

“We are both in agreement on our opposition to the policy of apartheid," they said, “but accept that people individually have different views on how best to give expression to this opposition.”
