LITHOPS OPALINA, OR LIVING STONES, are succulent plants native to South Africa. They consist of two rounded leaves which are so closely fitted together that there seems to be only a fissure between them: Usually their colour is grey or green and these plants are extremely difficult to pick out from pebbles among which they grow. It is said that their colour can change to correspond to the pebbles around them. The plants are only really noticeable when they are in flower. Flowers emerge from between the tightly pressed leaves and these are pale yellow in the variety illustrated here.
