REBEL GAINS IN CONGO
Situation ‘Serious’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) USUMBURA (Burundi), June 25. Congolese rebels were advancing in strength on the important north Katanga town of Kasongo and embassy officials in Usumbura reported the situation was extremely serious. Kasongo is 200 miles north of Albertville, the city on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, which fell to rebels loyal to the Leftist, Pierre Mulele, last week.
The rebel leader is understood to command considerable support in the Kasongo region and it is feared Congolese Government troops will be incapable of defending Kasongo. The British Government may use helicopters to rescue 18 Britons, including women and children, who are cut off deep in rebel-held territory. Nothing has been heard from the Britons, members of the Pentecostal Mission, for several days. They include five married couples, two single women, and six children. About 70 Europeans are believed to be still in Albertville and the rebels have refused them permission to leave.
