Making Right Turns
TT is apparent that confux sion still exists in the minds of some drivers and cyclists as to the correct procedure for the approach to a right turn, the Transport Department says. In the case of a right turn at an Intersection in a 30 m.p.h. speed limit area, the approach should be made on the left of, but as close as practicable to the middle of the roadway from which the driver is turning. When all is clear, the driver should then proceed into the roadway that he is entering, keeping just to the left of its centre. As soon as he can safely do so, the driver should then move as far as possible to the left. The procedure would be the same for a right turn into a vehicle entrance or driveway. Where the approach to an intersection has been marked
out in lanes, a driver wishing to turn right must drive in the correct lane which will be clearly shown by markings painted on the roadway. If necessary, the driver must wait in the lane until the way is clear.
He should then make the turn as quickly and directly as he can with safety. Provided lanes are marked on the roadway, the procedure is the same both within and outside 30 m.p.h. areas. Should a driver wish to make a right turn outside a 30 m.p.h. area where there are no marked lanes, he must maintain his normal driving position as far to the left of the roadway as practicable, watching for oncoming and overtaking traffic. If the way is not clear, the driver must stop and wait before making his turn, moving off the sealed surface if necessary.
