BIRTH PILLS

Vatican View Clarified

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyrights LONDON, June 19. Dr. Heenan, the Archbishop of Westminster, said yesterday that he ■ had received Vatican backing for his recent directive to Roman Catholics in England and Wales not to use “birth ' pills.” Dr. Heenan said last month that under no circumstances could Roman Catholics use contraceptive pills and repeated his Church’s teaching on the birth control problem.

Later when an interview by Cardinal Ottaviana, secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office was reported in Britain, some interpreted it as criticising Dr. Heenan.

Dr. Heenan arid that Cardinal Ottaviani had replied that he would not venture to criticise a statement made “in full conformity with the teaching of the Church.” The Cardinal added: “On the contrary, I intended to warn these who launch new theories on questions which must still await the guidance of the supreme magfstorium of the Chureh.”
