CHEERS ON ’CHANGE
Reaction In London
especial Crspdl. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 18.
Good trade figures for May were greeted with relief followed by some quiet cheering on the Stock Exchange. Throughout last week and earlier this week equity shares had shown a remarkable resilience after driving downwards for the better part of the month. Then they marked time while waiting for yesterday’s announcement by the Board of Trade. Its statement that Britain's exports were nearly an alltime record last month resulted in a continuation of the firm trend.
The May exports at £3som Showed a £3om increase over April. With imports being £7m down, the trade gap was narrowed to £67m compared with £lo7m in April. One interpretation of these figures is that Britain’s economy should remain buoyant throughout the autumn when the General Electiori campaign will be in full-swing.
Allen Ind. Final.—Directors of Allen Industries, .Ltd., recommend a final dividend of 4 per ■cent; ex dividend July 8. Books will close July 8 to 21 Inclusive. —(P.A.)
