Indoor Bowls Pairs Final Was All Canterbury

The final of the pairs at the New Zealand indoor bowls championship yesterday was an all-Canterbury affair, and for the first time one province provided the four semi-finalists. The winner was W. H. Cuttance, who beat M. Charlesworth, 25-16, in the final.

Cuttance and his lead, D. B. Cook; played ' steadily throughout, and their final opponents were a father and son combination, R. Charlesworth leading for his son. The pairs final did not produce the high standard of singles final, with some flashes of good play between much that was indifferent. Cuttance led 20-7 after the finish of the twelfth end and seemed to have the match won. However, Charlesworth fought back. He gained a six on the thirteenth and then a two and a one, but Cuttance finally proved too steady. Canterbury’s Fifth

It was the fifth pairs title that Canterbury has won since

the championships were started in 1950.

There were 287 qualifiers for the post-section play and many notable names quickly fell by the wayside. L. Dunn, a former title-holder, lost his second game to T. Burn (Waikato) but Burn immediately lost his next game to G. W. Thomas (Canterbury), who went through to the final 16. P. Clark (Bay of Plenty), the North Island pairs champion, lasted only one game, losing to Cuttance. R. Fridd (Canterbury), the 1957 champion, went to the fifth round before he was beaten by S. Hitchcock (Auckland), who ' lost to the run-ner-up, Charlesworth. Results:

Fourth Round. —R. Watkin (Canterbury) beat C. Hale (South Otago), 15-5; W. H. Cuttance (Canterbury) beat G. W. Thomas (Canterbury), 12-1; K. Adair (Canterbury) beat R. Flynn (Wellington), 11-7: H. E. Keen (Central Otago) beat P. Logan (Canterbury), 8-5; P. Stone (Wanganui) beat G. Stowell (South Canterbury), 11-2; M. Charlesworth (Canterbury) beat R. Filby (Auckland), 10-4; R. Williams (Canterbury) beat Mrs P. Hitchcock (Auckland), 11-8; J. Curry (Bay of Plenty) beat A. H. Thomas (Wellington), 8-5. Quarter-finals.—Cuttance beat Watkins, 9-2; Adair beat Keen, 8-2; Charlesworth beat Stone, 8-3; Williams beat Curry, 7-6.

Semi-final: Cuttance beat Adair, 9-6; Charlesworth beat Williams, 8-3. Final.—Cuttance beat Charlesworth, 25-16.

Mohi Out Of League Side

Injury has caused the withdrawal of the Canterbury Rugby League prop, M. Mohi (Marist), from the team to play West Coast at Greymouth on Sunday. Mohi was hurt in the match against Christchurch last Saturday and may not play again for three weeks. It is thought that he played too soon after a previous injury. Mohi’s replacement as reserve is the Canterbury B player, T. L. Bisman (Papanui).
