COMPLEX ROOF
Opera House Cost Rises (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY, June 17. Estimated cost of the Sydney Opera House has risen by £5 million to £17.4 million. The Minister for Works, Mr P. N. Ryan, today said the new figure was revealed in a revised estimate of the cost by the architect, Mr Joern Utzon.
Mr Ryan said the major component in the increased cost arose from the construction of the complex roof structure of the opera house. He said this substantial increase in the estimate needed close investigation before it could be accepted by the Government, and he had asked Mr Utzon for a more detailed estimation of the revised costs. Construction cost was first estimated at £4.8 million. It was then said this figure was not to be exceeded by more than 10 per cent Last year the Government estimated that the opera house would cost £12.5 million.
