The Canterbury Regiment
Sir.—One of the reasons given for the disbanding of our own provincial regiment, with its fine record of service, has been the necessity to reduce expenditure on the defence forces. I now read with interest the Prime Minister’s statement that taxes may have to be increased for defence. One may justifiably assume that this means that the Canterbury Regiment will be restored to the Army List in which case a very large number of Canterbury people will be pleased. On the other hand, the clear thinking behind the editorial in this morning’s paper will be heartening, also, and I suggest that the Canterbury Regiment be immediu and the army Of the Ministry of Works be correspondingly reduced. That will please many more Yours, etc., _ I/CANT. June 18, 1964.
