Essential Needs Not Supplied

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GENEVA, June 17. The 75 developing countries said in Geneva yesterday they regarded the world trade conference as being in no way adequate or commensurate with their essential needs.

In a joint declaration, they said they considered, the conference’s final recommendations “as only an initial step towards an international endorsement of a new trade policy.” But they accepted the results of the conference in the hope that they would “lay the foundation for more sub-

stantial progress in the period ahead." They had also accepted the resolutions in recognition of the need for a co-operative effort in the international field. Adverse Conditions The joint declaration added': '"The efforts of developing countries to raise the living standards of their peoples, which are now being

made under adverse external conditions, should be. supplemented and strengthened by constructive international action. “Such action should establish a new frame-work. of international trade that is wholly consistent with the needs of accelerated development”

The developing countries attached singular importance to the establishment of international machinery in the field of trade and development.
