S. RHODESIA POLICY

‘Last Effort’ WithU.K. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GWELO (Southern Rhodesia), June 16. Mr lan Smith, the Southern Rhodesian Prime Minister, said yesterday the Southern Rhodesian Government was making, a last effort to negotiate independence with the British Government, but he was-not very hopeful about the outcome. He told a meeting of about 800 people:— “The worst- thing we can do is to drift on. There is a limit to the time we can go on negotiating and drifting and I don’t think that limit is very far off.” Asked if his Government intended to put all the full facts of the independence issue before the country as suggested by Sir Roy Welensky, Mr Smith said:— “The time is not very far distant when we shall be able to give the people of Southern Rhodesia the thing that has been promised to them for years and what is their right.”

Ice Hut

A small ice hut is being completed at Hallett Station in Antarctica with built-in heating apparatus to improve methods of obtaining sea water for distillation. The objects of the new plant is to keep a hole through Hie ice clear during the colder, winter months. Keeping the hole clear has in the past been a problem. Most Antarctic stations use snow for fresh water, but Hallett Station is dependent on distilling sea water as the amount of snow available is small and somewhat contaminated by the original occupants of the station—the Adelie penguins who return each summer.
