Tennis Disapproval Motion Rescinded

■The competitions committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association Won a vote of.caoMence last night when, a meeting of delegates voted to rescind a previous motion expressing disapproval of a committee move. At a delegatps* meeting on March 33, a motion disapproving the committee's action in proposing to altei the rules and that the competition rules set down at the start of the season should remain unaltered for the season was carried: The chairman of the committee (Mr R. X Murphy) said the committee’s action in proposing to alter the rules was to eliminate the need for a 10-point winning margin and the possibility of a playoff between the two top teams in the senior competition. “In The. Neck” But as Mr A. C. Lee (a member of the committee) pointed out, the committee had been too honest/ for Woolston had had a clearcut victory in the final round. "If we had said nothing we would , have been all right,” he said. "But we made t move and What did we get? —we got it in the neck.” Another member of the committee, Mrs' B. A. Miles, said -the committee always tried to be fair, but in this matter it had been too fair. • "It does not matter two hoots who wins or who comes second,” she said. “The game’s the thing. . I was always taught to try to win—but to lose gracefully.” Worth A Trial The new points system had been worth a trial but he had not reckoned on the competitions committee taking it upon itself to alter the original motion, said Mr G. E. R. Atkinson. He said he did not think the rule should be altered in order that a decision could be reached. If there was not sufficient playing time the two top teams should be left equal, he said. Mr Murphy said the essential rule had not been broken. Over the years the committee had had to adjust the rules on occasions to finish before the traditional Easter deadline—but it had always tried to be fair. But, he added, the committee would take to heart all

the comments made by delegates at the meeting. Townaments Clash * Because of the large list of fixtures involving young players next summer it was probable that the Canterbury junior championships would have tn coincide with the New Zealand junior tournament, said Mr R. B. Brown. Mr Brown, who is chairman of the association's junior management committee, said the' elash would mean that Canterbury's best 20 juniors would miss the provincial titles. But he said, it appeared that the clash was unavoidable. The national junior championships are to -be held from Jsnuary 2® to 30. Next year it was hoped to hold a coaching school in Christchurch. ■Another Invasion Another Southland tennis invasion of Christchurch is to be made in August. Mr Brown said that a party of 45 Southland players would take part in a junior tournament here. Competition at the tournament will be in four sections—under 19, under 17, under 15 and under 13. . .
