APARTHEID OPPOSITION
U.N. May Study Measures (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 17. The Security Council was called upon last night to establish an expert committee representing each of its member States to study what measures might be taken against South Africa in a bid to curb the practice of apartheid. The proposal, formally offered by Norway in a draft resolution, also would give the South African Government until the end of November to make known its views about a United Nations suggestion for a national convention of representatives of all elements In the Republic. Mr Adlai E. Stevenson, chief delegate of the United States, indicated to the council that he would vote for it. A British spokesman said that the plan would encounter strong reservations in London. Mr Sievert Nielse, the Norwegian delegate, told reporters he hoped Britain would feel able to vote for the resolution.
The Soviet Union, which had urged the application of economic sanctions against South Africa, was expected to support the new proposal.
