LAKE GIVES FINAL SHAPE TO AUSTRALIA’S FEDERAL CAPITAL.—After 50 years of planning, Lake Burley Griffin has become a reality. The recent filling of the lake gave Canberra the final shape and unity of the grand design conceived by the Chicago architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in 1911. This aerial view shows the Civic Centre in the foreground and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. The lake is seven miles long, and 22 miles in circumference, and has an average depth of 15 feet. The population of Canberra is 78,000 and is expected to reach 100,000 by 1967.
