Drilling To Resume At Deep Cove On July 1
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, June 15. Drilling in the £9 million tail-race tunnel at Deep Cove was scheduled to resume on July 1, the project manager of the Bechtel Pacific Corporation, Mr N. S. Long, said today.. Drilling was halted temporarily while the 45-ton permanent jumbo and massive sliding floor were assembled inside the tunnel. Drilling
stopped on April 22 when the tunnel was 908 feet.
Mr Long said assembling the two machine; was expected to be completed by the end of the month, possibly sooner. Drilling would start immediately the assembly was finished. Mr Long said overseas consultants who had visited the site recently had found that rock conditions at Deep Cove -ere even better than expected. The rock was ideal for tunnelling, without bad seams or underground streams.
A report on the consultants’ visit would be submitted to the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) in two months. The West Arm access tunnel had now been driven to a depth of 590 ft. A total of 87ft had been driven since work resumed after the. recent strike.
