REFUGEES IN INDIA
Church Council Sends Aid
The New Zealand National Council of Churches has sent £lOOO from its Christmas appeal fund to Assam, India, for the relief and rehabilitation of 100,000 refugees in transition camps there. Nearly half the refugees are Christians.
The mass exodus is the result of Moslem-Hindu hostilities in east Pakistan. Refugees are coming across the 100-mile border at the rate of 4000 a day. The national council of India quickly used up all its disaster funds, amounting to £3500.
The World Council of Churches sent out urgent appeals to national councils all over the world, asking for a total of £20,000. The money is urgently needed for food, medical supplies, and inoculation against smallpox and cholera in the over-crowded
camps. Government and voluntary organisations are working in the hastilyestablished camps, distributing blankets, clothing and food.
