Obituary

MR H. D. CARO “The Frets" Special Sereice HAMILTON, June 12. Mr Harold David Caro. Mayor of Hamilton from 1938 to 1953, died in the Waikato Hospital this week. He was 77. Mr Caro was born in Christchurch and educated in Auckland. During the First World War he served with the armed forces. He opened the business of Caro's Bargain Stores in Hamilton in 1923. In 1931 Mr Caro was elected to the Hamilton Borough Council. Seven years later he became Mayor, a post he held until 1953. He was re-elected to the city council >n 1959 and retired in November. 1962. From ‘948 to 1953 Mr Caro was chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board. He retired to live at Raglan. He was a member of the Waikato Racing Club committee, and of the management committees of the Northern Boxing and Auckland Hockey Associations. j He was chairman for many years of the Waikato Patriotic Fund Board and was awarded the O.BL for public and patriotic services. Mr Caro is survived by a daughter and a son.
