DIABETICS WARNED
“Clinitest” Tablets 6V.Z. Pre.™ Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. A warning to all diabetics who use “Clinitest” tablets that some of the tablets have been found to be faulty was given today by the Direc-tor-General of Health (Dr. H. B. Turbott). Dr. Turbott said two patients had been admitted, to hospital in a coma after getting false readings of their sugar level when using “Clinitest” tablets. The makers of “Clinitest” pointed out on the package that moisture could cause the tablets to deteriorate, Dr. Turbott said. Usually this deterioration was obvious by a change in bolour. “However, some tablets which look all right may also be giving incorrect results and the position is being investigated.” he said. Dr. Turbott, who issued the warning under authority of section 28A of the Food and Drugs Act, said that until this investigation was complete, diabetics should not rely on “Clinitest” tablets, but should use some other method to check their sugar level.
He said persons in doubt should consult their doctor.
An amendment to the Food and Drugs Act passed in 1962 empowers the Director-Gen-eral of Health to issue such warnings and specifies that they are privileged.
