The Press SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 1964. Faithful Servants

The Birthday Honours List recognises service to the community by some of New Zealand’s outstanding citizens over many years. Central and local government, the civil service, the armed forces, the professions, welfare organisations, farming, producer organisations, and commerce are represented in the list. The most widely known of the four new knights is Sir Ronald Algie, Speaker of the House of Representatives, a former Ministar of Education and a Parliamentarian of long experience and distinction. Sir John Ormond’s 13-year term as chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board spans a period of sweeping changes in the marketing of meat. Not only New Zealand farmers but the general public have cause to be grateful that, thanks largely to Sir John Ormond’s energy and skill as a negotiator, the changes have been largely beneficial. Sir Carl Smith has made outstanding contributions to the community in the fields of commerce and university education. From a rating in the pre-war Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Sir Peter Phipps, after a notable war-time record, rose to Chief of the New Zealand Naval Staff. He left this position a year ago to become Chief of the Defence Staff.

Canterbury people will note with pleasure the awards to Dr. J. F. Landreth (C.8.E.), Mr W. H. G. R. Sarney, Miss Irene Tolerton (0.8. E. Mr J. Allan, Mr E. P. Cahill and Mr R. K. Milne (M.8.E.). A reminder of New Zealand’s “export of talent” is the inclusion in the Australian list of Mr R. B. Thomson, 0.8. E. Having acquired a taste for the Antarctic as a member of a New Zealand scientific party, Mr Thomson soon afterwards accepted appointment as officer in charge of an Australian station in the Antarctic. In this position he carried out outstanding scientific and exploratory work.
