Sport For Youngsters: (3) Golf
In the last few years golf has been attracting more and more boys and girls, largely through the efforts of the Canterbury Golf Foundation and the Harewood Young People’s Club. During the school holidays in May and August, class tuition is given without charge, and tournaments are played at Harewood, a course the late Mr A. R. Blank was primarily responsible for reviving in the interests of young golfers. The secretary-treasurer of the golf foundation is Mr R. W. Hope, 19 Totara street (telephone 47.-411). Many hundreds of school pupils have belonged to the foundation, and many boys and girls have also become junior members* of the various clubs in and about Christchurch. These photographs were taken at Harewood on the day of one of the foundation’s tournaments. TOP LEFT: Two prominent coaches watch Nicholas Bettie in action. The coaches are Mr N. H. Fuller (left), professional at the Christchurch Club, and Mr H. R. Blair, formerly professional at that club. TOP RIGHT: Chris Cunningham holds the flag, and John Dewsbury looks somewhat apprehensive as Tim Tai but putts. LOWER LEFT: John Dewsbury driving from the second tee; his partner wears the air of one quite accustomed to the strain of tournament play. LOWER RIGHT: Chris, Tim and John check their score-cards at the end of the round.
