Western Hard Hit For Soccer Final

Western will wait until the last moment before deciding whether its captain and lefthalf, P. Frost is fit to play in the local final of the Chatham Cup soccer competition against Nomads at English Park today. Frost suffered deep-seated bruising in a thigh playing for Canterbury against Auckland last Sunday.

Yesterday it was thought the chances were 50-50 on Frost playing. Western has been hard hit by injuries. The right-wing, A. Treadwell, and the centrehalf, K. Clarke, have not recovered from knocks suffered in last Saturday’s semi-finals, causing changes in the forward and half-back lines. B. Smith has been switched to right-wing, with the world tourist, D. Torkington, at inside-right, and the former Canterbury outside-right, A. Bishop, at left-wing. W. Rodger has replaced Clarke at centre-half, and if Frost cannot play, J. Brock

will move to left-half and M. Thompson will play at righthalf. Nomads* Changes Nomads will have D. Chapman in goal—he has recovered from the injury that kept him out of the Canterbury team to play Auckland —but have made a change at right-half, where D. Ennis replaces G. McKenzie. The two teams last met in the Chatham Cup final in 1962 when Western, in a dramatic recovery, came back from 1-3 to win, 4-3, with a final goal by M. Clements from the last kick of the game. Nomads won the competition last season, and went on to contest the national final at Wellington, losing, 1-3, to North Shore. It should be another hard and fast game between two strong and determined defences and two capable forward lines. Nomads’ only defeat this season has been to Western, but they played the whole of the second half with 10 men. Teams:— Nomads: D. Chapman; J. Kissack. A. Hawthorne; D. Ennis. D. Simmonds. G. Donaldson: C. Martin, A. van Rooyen, R. Muirson, F. Ouwerkerk, R. McLean. Western: D. Smith; P. Coman, I. Laby; J. Brock, W. Rodeer, P. Frost: B. Smith, D. Torkinßton, M. Clements, D. Bussey. A. Bishop.
