Ashburton Strongest In Canterbury Judo Titles
An outstanding win by Ashburton Judo Kwai was the main feature of the Canterbury Judo championships held at the Bryndwyr Y.M.C.A. during the weekend. The Ashburton team was, M. Tate, B. Turner, S. Gielingh, J. Bonntface, P. Kirwin (captain). The club's win reflected much credit on its founder. Mr F. O’Connell, Black Belt and first Dan; one of the strongest in-, fluences in th-> establishment of the sport in- Canterbury. The general standard was high and the championship was notable for an exceptional number of fast and exciting bouts. The individual championship was won by Gordon Church (Can-Am-Ju Club) who beat his club-mate, the present South Island champion, C. Edwards, in the final. Cne of ths most creditable performances tvas that of E. Joyce (Otematata) who did exceptionally well to reach the semi-finals beating former Canterbury champion, F. Best, in the second round. Results:— Open Individual Championship.—First 'Round; B. Martin (Oamaru) beat F. Gielingh (Ashburton), E.' Edward (Can-Am-Ju) beat R. Symns (Canterbury University), V. Hunter (Can-Am-Ju) beat B. Hawkins (Crichton Cobbers), F. Best (Crichton Cobbers) beat H. Sue (Canterbury University), G. Church (Can-Am-Ju) beat R. Long (Crichton Cobbers), E. Joyce (Otematata) beat I. Kenna (Can-Am-Ju), M. Kaa (Crichton Cobbers) beat T. Stayman (Crichton Cobbers) by default, D. Bryson (Crichton Cobbers) beat R. Hanham (Can-Am-Ju). Second Round: C. Edwards beat B. Martin, V. Hunter drew with G. Church, E. Joyce beat F. Best, E. Joyce beat V. Hunter. Semi-final.—C. Edwards beat
