HORSE TEAM FOR TOKYO

Eight Riders In Training (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, May 29. The newly-appointed manager of New Zealand’s horse team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, Mr B. G. Rutherford, of North Canterbury, in Gisborne today looked at his prospective charges and said that he was very happy with their condition. A squad of six riders and horses are in Gisborne for two days of training under the official team trainer, Mr C. Bolger, the former Hungarian representative and winner of the modern pentathlon at the Berlin Olympics. The original squad named by the New Zealand Horse Society consisted of eight riders and their horses, but Mrs D. Temperton (Rangitiki) with Pot Luck, and C. Mould (Dunedin) with Treason, have now withdrawn. Mr Rutherford commented: “The team seems to be picking itself.” Mr Rutherford said it was anticipated that four riders and five horses would be selected. The final choice will be from A. White (Hastings) on El Dorado, R. Preston (Wellington) on Black Watch, Miss M. Grenside (Hastings) on Smail, and the three Gisborne riders, B. Hansen, on Tide, G. Hansen, of Saba Sam, and C. Matthews, on Syndicate.
