John’s Mistake Is Fancy For Otago Steeple Chase

John’s Mistake and Tadpole, both from Southland stables, look the best of a small field for the Otago Steeplechase on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting today.

John’s Mistake has been the find of the autumn jumping races in Southland. Heis unbeaten in four starts over country, and his Gore! trainer, E. A. Winsloe, must; feel hopeful that this young] Super gelding will give the stable an Otago Steeples vic- J tory for the second year in succession. Vamoose won for the stable last year. Tadpole will be attempting to concede John's Mistake 1231 b. It is a stiff test for the I Columcille gelding, but one that might not be beyond him if his jumping is sure. Tadpole should bow to none for speed in this field. Horses from outside Canterbury won seven of the eight races at Waimate last Saturday, and it will be asking too much for the Canterbury horses to make an equally successful raid on Otago today. But Canterbury will have a bright prospect in at least one race, the St. Clair Intermediate Handicap. This is Nippa Leigh, a Christchurch-owned, Washdyke-trained Dogger Bank gelding with a record of three firsts, two seconds, and one fourth in seven starts as a season.

He won at Wingatui in December, and again in February, and in the meantime he has beaten a field of good hack sprinters at Riccarton.

The T.A.B. double will be on the Birthday and Winter Handicaps. Kumai and Golden Glen, the latter a stablemate of John’s Mistake, look the best prospects in the Birthday Handicap, and Golden Blossom, Tampa, Sir Athol, and St. Malo are fancied most on the second leg. There will be an on-course double on the Trial Stakes and the Brighton Improvers’ Handicap. Additional riders for Wingatui are; S. D. Hawthorne: Gladaub. Golden Boa, The Ranger, San Rafael, Ravelston. A. D. Hastie: Soaring High, Game Call. G. W. Wright: Golden Webb, Tempt. J. A. Messent: Glen Yon. F. K. Skelton: Clayton’s Pride. A. J.
