Chance For Gay lee In Sprint At Ashburton

Southland stables usually have a good innings at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting. One of their strongest contenders on the first day of this year’s meeting will be Gaylee in the Rakaia Handicap, a sprint race.

Gaylee, a six-year-old mare by Captain Adios from Caledonian Girl, is trained at Hedgehope by A. W. Skinner for Mr A. D. Campbell, of Invercargill. She gained an impressive win over two miles at Washdyke a fortnight ago and last Saturday she looked a shade unlucky when fourth in the Winter Stakes .won by Wildwood Chief. If she races as well today, she should take beating.

Medico has been racing consistently and without much luck in some of his appearances. The Light Brigade —Loyal Nurse four-year-old had to overcome a bad draw when he finished third to Wildwood Chief and Dorstan at Addington last week. If he races as generously in this event, he could extend Gaylee.

Flying Over followed up some sound efforts with a fifth at Addington last week. But for hanging and tangling near the furlong post, he might have returned a dividend. He has shown ability in winter conditions in the past and might upset calculations.

Bonnie Lord faded to seventh last Saturday at Addington after being handy racing to the two furlongs. At his previous start he finished second to Gold Maru at Washdyke. Bonnie Lord looks well at the moment and he might add interest to the finish.

First Battle has been rather disappointing since he won the Sapling Stakes at long odds two years ago. He is adept in soft ground and could well have conditions to suit today. Carina Star, Burns Rival •nd Trysail are others capable of a bold showing. The double will be run on the Durbar Handicap and the Stewards’ Handicap. Squire, Jacobite and Wildwood Chief form a likely trio in the first leg, while Mighty Chief, Trapper and Asia Minor will dominate betting on the second leg. Fair weather is forecast, but the track is expected to be on the soft side after rain early in the week. Acceptances are:—
