DECISION IN S.A.
No Television Yet (N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, May 27. South Africans today read about the latest row over whether they should be able to watch television—and learned that the Government’s answer is still “no.” Newspapers gave prominence to yesterday’s debate in Parliament in which Dr. Albert Hertzog, the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, declared “television has become the greatest destroyer of family life in the Western world."
He said television could break up family life, and once this happened “you get the phenomena of the ’ mods and rockers in England.”
Rumours that , television would be introduced swept South Africa early this year. Importers were reported to have formed groups to bring in sets from Europe.
