A New Zealand mother rescued a mitten from the hand of' her child, just a few months old, and found that a thread of wool wound around a finger had cut off circulation. This is one of several cases cited by Dr. Joan Mackay to illustrate the danger, under certain conditions, of babies’ mittens and bootees. The finger became gangrenous and it was necessary to amputate part of it Dr. Mackay, who is responsible for maternal and child health in the Department of Health, says that a baby’s layette should be examined for loose threads.
