ENGINEERS’ NEW POSTS

ln M.0.Wl Mr B. W. Spooler, chief designing engineer, Ministry of Works, Wellington, has been appointed assistant chief civil engineer in Wellington with responsibilities covering the whole of New Zealand. His post as designing engineer has been taken by Mr R. G. Norman. Mr Spooner is a past executive vice-president of the New Zealand Institution of En-

gineers, a member of the national committee on earthquake engineering and a former chairman of the executive committee for the yrofessional qualifications. Mr Spooner began his career at Tuai in the Wairoa district. In 1947 he was transferred to the head office, where he became assistant design engineer. Until 1955 he was senior civil designing engineer on various hydroelectric schemes throughout New Zealand.

Since 1955 Mr Spooner has been chief designing engineer (civil) and has been responsible for the technical direction of Ministry of Works forces on many major civil engineering structures. These include the Mohaka highway bridge, the Hamilton railway bridge and motorway structures in Auckland, including the Newmarket viaduct. Mr Spooner was born in Auckland and attended the Auckland Grammar School.
